November 14 1922

On that day, the BBC began radio services in the UK. That is only 86 years, or about three generations ago. Radio ... that is really old hogwash ; it feels like it has always been there.

I wrote it before : over the last hundred or so years, the world has changed more than in the earlier millennia since mankind appeared on this blue planet. That alone helps to indicate that present growth rates are untenable. A short time peak in a very long history.

Of course, I am a rather pessimistic contrarian. Optimists will tell you that one hundred years ago no one could have imagined what was to happen in that period. And that future developments will be of such nature and amplitude that we cannot possibly imagine what they will be.

I don't know who will be proven right. All I know for sure is that 100 years from now I shall not be blogging anymore !

World diabetes day

I read that November 14 is "World Diabetes Day". And what is that going to change ?

I'm starting to get terminally tired by these "We care about ... whatever ... days". Today we care, tomorrow we forget.

Chances are these totally useless manifestations will kill me a long time before my diabetes has a chance to do so.

Inanities

-- In the UK, "The Department of Health is putting the fast food companies McDonald's and KFC and processed food and drink manufacturers such as PepsiCo, Kellogg's, Unilever, Mars and Diageo at the heart of writing government policy on obesity, alcohol and diet-related disease, the Guardian has learned."

Some people are scandalised and compare this to putting the tabacco industry in charge of smoking policies. But I think it is a realistic move :  multinationals run the world, whether local governments like that or not. So why should we pretend they are not ?

-- In thus US "The highest-ranking House official in charge of environmental and energy policy may soon be a Republican legislator who denies climate change on the grounds of his belief that nothing bad can come of the Earth unless it is preordained by God."

Stop the world, I want to get off !

Exorcism

"Anyone who’s deluded enough to think “demons” influence human behavior — seriously, in the real world — should be considered a possible danger to others."

Read on : http://littlegreenfootballs.com/article/37557_Do_Religious_Fanatics_Have_the_Right_to_Conduct_Exorcisms_in_the_Workplace.

I fully agree that  exorcism looks more like a spooky medieval ritual than as a politically correct  psychiatric analysis - although I think both are largely hogwash.

One cannot and may not believe in demons. That is not done any more. But is it ? Think about rampant capitalism, free market beliefs, globalisation, profit maximisation and greed.

Maybe they need a good exorcist at Brink's.

How things change

"To compel a man to furnish funds for the propagation of ideas he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical."

Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), third president of the USA from 1801 to 1809.

Blogging

I thought I had good reasons to grumble a bit  now and again about Blogger and the reliability of its platforms.

That was until I read the following :

"Je n’apprends rien à la plupart d’entre vous, la plate-forme des blogs du Monde.fr a été fermée pendant deux longs jours – 54 heures exactement – à la suite d’une malencontreuse erreur humaine.

Le plus grave, c’est que les conséquences sont désastreuses pour la plupart des auteurs car certains éléments composant les blogs (photos et sons) ont été effacés lors de cet incident et n’apparaissent donc plus."

I think I'd better shut up !

Brutal partisan warfare ?

I thought that in preparation of the recent mid-term elections a terribly brutal warfare had erupted between republicans and democrats in the US, but not everyone agrees :

" ... far from being in an era of brutal partisan warfare, as conventional wisdom holds and as watching the nightly television news might suggest, the United States is now in the grip of a political duopoly in which both parties are thoroughly complicit. They play a game: they agree to fight viciously over certain things to retain the allegiance of their respective bases, while agreeing not to fight about anything that seriously endangers the privileges of America's new financial elites. Whether this duopoly will endure, and what to do about it, are perhaps the most important questions facing Americans. The current arrangement all but guarantees the continuing decline of the United States as a nation, and of the welfare of the bottom 90% of its citizens."

Interesting. Apparently more and more Americans, although still a small minority, understand that their country is losing its grip and its leadership position in the "free world".

Brink's

"Ons land heeft decennia geleden bewust niet voor een vorm van cowboykapitalisme gekozen, maar voor een overlegmodel. Dat de directie van Brink's voorwendt dat ze onze overlegcultuur niet kent, is nog minder dan een flauw excuus. Het is geen excuus."

Dit soort cowboys kunnen we hier missen als de pest, en toch lijkt de overheid nog maar eens door de knieën te zullen gaan voor enkele  grabbelaars ?
