In a statement, White House spokesman Jay Carney said Mr Obama intended to "speak to civil society to encourage Burma's ongoing democratic transition".

That of course is a blessed all American pretext ; the real reason is to open new markets a.s.a.p. America Inc never sleeps. And whether the president walks behind a flag with an elephant or a donkey is but a mere detail.
