On that fateful day, 97 years ago, the Huns invaded Belgium. It was the first day of four years of bloodshed and utter madness ; the butchery ended on November 11 1918.
We commemorate all the people who died in that world wide madness. Europe's youth was decimated, but to no avail. Twenty one years later there was a new, much more terrible episode in mankind's road to utter destruction.
Shall we ever learn ?
