Near Poitiers, France, the leader of the Franks, Charles Martel and his men, defeated a large army of Moors, stopping the Muslims from spreading into Western Europe. The governor of Cordoba, Abdul Rahman Al Ghafiqi, was killed during the battle.

I think that this battle of Tours (sometimes called battle of Poitiers) was one of the most significant battles in the Middle Ages. Without Martel's victory, christianity would never have become the dominant religion in Western Europe. And European history would have been totally different. But of course, many historians no longer accept the importance of the battle - see the second Wikipedia article.
